Hiring the Right People, at the Right Time, for the Right Reason

SaaS and tech businesses are still growing, just not in the same way. Leaders are under pressure to deliver with smaller teams, tighter budgets, and higher expectations.
Growth is still happening, but it’s more intentional. In the UK, the SaaS market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.5% between 2025 and 2030 (Grand View Research). The opportunities are there but leaders need to be smart about where and how they invest in people.
Why “just hire” often isn’t the answer
When teams are under pressure, hiring feels like the quick fix. It shows action. But the wrong hire is costly.
REC estimates that a bad mid-manager hire on a £42,000 salary costs over £132,000 once recruitment, training, lost productivity, and disruption are added up.
Smart leaders don’t ask “how fast can we fill this role?” They ask “what outcome are we solving for and is hiring the best way to achieve it?”
Hiring to solve, not to scale
For years, the playbook was simple: hire more people, scale faster. That doesn’t work when efficiency matters more than headcount.
Today, the smarter move is hiring to solve: bringing in targeted expertise or behaviours that directly address a specific gap.
- If revenue is flat, do you need another salesperson, or a commercial leader who can reset your go-to-market strategy?
- If product delivery is slowing, is the answer more engineers or a Product Manager who can sharpen focus and priorities?
- If you’re integrating after an acquisition, do you need extra operation staff or a CFO who’s done it before and can steady the ship?
What to ask before you hire
Before opening a role, pause and ask:
- What business outcome are we solving for?
- Could our current team do this with the right support?
- Is this a short-term capacity gap (and therefore a temp/ interim will solve this issue), or a long-term capability need?
- Do we already have the capability that coaching or a leadership development programme could nurture?
Leaders who ask these questions upfront make sharper decisions. They avoid expensive missteps and ensure every hire is directly tied to impact.
And when hiring is the answer…
…make it count. A precise brief. Outcomes defined upfront. A process that moves with pace and discipline. And a partner who knows how to find the people who don’t just fit your business but elevate it.
Final thoughts
Hiring the right people, at the right time, for the right reason isn’t easy- it’s a leadership decision that shapes the trajectory of the business.
Sometimes the answer lies in developing the talent you already have. Sometimes it’s a targeted hire. Often, it’s both. What matters is clarity: knowing which lever will move the needle and acting with intent.
At Tribus People, we help you understand the capabilities and skills already in your business, when to elevate and develop them- and when to bring in new talent. And when hiring is the right approach, we help you find and secure the people who will make the biggest impact.
